Wow! I think WorldCat may be my favorite reference item we have discussed all semester. I just thought I loved the PINES site. WorldCat is an incredible resource for librarians and for library patrons. When you enter the site, you have several options. You can perform a basic search for everything, or you can search only within books, DVDs, CDs, and articles. There’s also an option to download the WorldCat Mobile app, browse library collections by genre, build a bibliography, read reviews for libraries in your area, or use various tools such as WorldCat widgets, apps, and browser plug-ins. I can also create an account to personalize my WorldCat experience.
For the purposes of this assignment, I searched for one of the most popular books we have at our school library titled If I Stay by Gayle Foreman. In 0.18 seconds, 40 search results were found. The book I searched for was at the top of the list. Brief bibliographical information was listed for the book as well as links to find a copy of the book in a local library, to purchase the book through Better World Books, read reviews from goodreads.com and dogobooks.com, linked tags, linked subjects, and user lists that contain the book. One user added If I Stay to their list for people who loved John Green’s The Fault in our Stars, so I examined that list and found many more titles similar to these two books. Unfortunately, our school library was not listed, so I decided to try to locate the book in the West Georgia Regional Library. I was able to find a copy of the book in the West Georgia Regional Library and find the library on a map, view information about the library, or add it to my favorite libraries on WorldCat. One helpful feature is the ability to see which formats are available at different libraries. For example, the Cobb County Public Library System holds a large print copy of If I Stay.
I also decided to examine the article search feature within WorldCat. Because my assigned standard for our group’s 2nd Pathfinder is on the four major macromolecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids), I searched WorldCat for “macromolecules.” I found 264,919 items in less than half a second. Users were given options to filter the search results by format (article, book, archival material, computer files, journals, magazines, encyclopedias, etc.), by author, year, language, content, audience, and by topic. I filtered the search results for books and was able to locate a book in the library and by downloadable article and found 111 results. Although the majority of the articles seemed incredibly advanced, I thought the article search feature was helpful as well.
I assigned WorldCat a value of 10. I think it would be an incredible resource to teach our students during library orientation. I would love to add our library’s collection to the WorldCat database, so I plan to investigate a little further to find out how to make it happen.
