Grades: 7+ | Subject(s): College/Career | Overall rating: 10
Of all the resources we have reviewed, GA College 411 is the one I feel most familiar with and the one I feel most directly benefits our students. The site is a free directory of resources for students, parents, counselors, and teachers to help guide students through their transition from high school to work, post-secondary education, or the military. The site is provided by the state of Georgia through the Georgia Student Finance Commission and other state sponsors. At our school system, students begin meeting with their guidance counselors in the seventh grade to use GA College 411 to begin researching career interests. Every year through the senior year, the counselors work with the students through this site to finalize career and college/work/military plans.
For the purposes of this review, I have explored each section of the site. From the home page, users can login for a more personalized experience. If they have never logged in, students can select the category best describing themselves (middle school, high school, college, adult, or military), and the site will change to offer features relevant to the user. Students can also complete the GA College 411 Lifesense financial literacy online course, or learn about new HOPE scholarship information, the Accel program, Georgia Student Finance Commission events, or get help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
On the Career Planning tab, users can take six different interest/personality assessments to determine what careers might be suitable for their interests. They can also search for a particular career to find out more information. I did a search for "librarian" and found an overview, the skills and education required to become a librarian, what courses they should take, estimated income and outlook levels for librarians, interviews with actual librarians, and other resources. If the student is logged into GA College 411, he/she can save their interest/personality assessment results and potential careers to his/her profile. On this tab, students can also build a resume, find job interview or career planning tips, and even browse available jobs through the Department of Labor website.
On the High School Planning tab, users can complete their plan of study to map high school courses to career goals, review high school graduation requirements, prepare for end-of-course tests, learn about dual enrollment opportunities, and read helpful tips and advice. All our students complete a plan of study during their freshman year and revisit it yearly with their guidance counselor.
On the College Planning tab, users can view high school courses required by colleges, learn about college entrance exams (SAT, ACT, etc.), read information about different colleges (and if logged in, save post-secondary institutions to their profile), read about different majors and degree programs, read about transferring college credit already earned through AP courses, courses taken during dual enrollment, etc., read college tips and advice, and even apply to some colleges.
On the Financial Planning tab, users can learn about financial aid options, read about the HOPE scholarship program, find scholarships, use financial aid calculators, learn about the FAFSA, read articles, tips, and advice about financial aid, and learn about default and preventing financial hardships during and after college.
It's obvious I believe this is a valuable tool for all job seekers or for people entering college, work, or the military. It can guide a student every step of the way. If a student takes this site seriously and truly is sincere using the preparation tools available in this directory, their transition from high school to whatever they choose to do will be an easy one. I wish I could give it an overall rating of 15.
