Indexes and Abstracts
Indexes and abstracts are very similar reference works. Indexes are reference materials that provide citation information such as author, subject, and/or titles for periodicals. Abstracts are similar to indexes because they provide citations for journals, magazines, articles, etc.; however, they also provide an abstract, or a brief summary, for each article. Indexes and abstracts are important reference materials because they can "more fully reveal sources not covered in the general [library] catalog" (Bopp & Smith, 2011).
