Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Edition)
The Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Edition)
Grades: 10-Adult | Subject(s): All | Overall rating: 7
I found this resource while browsing through the dictionary options in the University of West Georgia's Galileo collection. According to the website, this resources gives users full-text access to the 20+ print volume of the dictionary. It contains more than half a million definitions, 2.4 million quotations, and illustrates the "evolution of the English language."
While simplistic, this type and search user interface is simple, easy-to-use, and effective. It lacks a lot of the "bells and whistles" of the Oxford Dictionaries Online; however, if one simply wants to find a definition or pronunciation for a word, this could be a helpful resource. With some of the online dictionaries, one can get bogged down in looking through all the "extra" features listed on the site.
As with earlier resources, I searched for the term "librarian" and found four basic definitions of the term. One interesting feature of this version is that it lists several sentence examples from earlier (much earlier) years, such as "Why mayn't I be witty, as a Man that keeps a Librarian is Learned?" Interesting, eh? It also lists earlier forms of the word, such as "librarianess," a female librarian.
While I believe my students would not appreciate this resource, I thought several of the definitions, terms used, and sentence examples given to be entertaining. I rated this resource a 7 because it was a little boring, but still informative.
