Dictionary.com is an incredible resource. It is free, contains a wealth of information, and is available in both web and mobile application formats. Users can also follow Dictionary.com on many different social networks. Every day, Dictionary.com lists a new word of the day, a word fact, an interesting daily article about words, interesting facts, crossword puzzles, thesaurus, translator, quotes, blog, and so much more. For many years, this site has been my “go to” destination for word spellings, definitions, and quotes.
In addition to perusing the interesting articles (13 Essential Literary Terms), defining the word of the day (pilar – of, pertaining to, or covered with hair), reading the word facts (if September means seven, why is it the ninth month and what is the difference between “a while” and “awhile”), and wasting time in playing a crossword puzzle, I finally decided to define a word. So, to review this site for this project, I searched the word “librarian.” Users can turn on or off the syllable feature and change the pronunciation feature to be in IPA or Spell formats. Both American English and British Engilish definitions and pronunciations were available. I also found that if playing Scrabble or Words with Friends (two of my favorite games), I could earn 11 or 14 points respectively for the word librarian. The origin, related forms, and sentence examples were also given. The site even listed quotes using the word librarian. Additionally, an option to “cite the source” was listed on the site. When I clicked on the link, correct citations of this resource were listed in APA, Chicago, MLA, IEEE, and BibTeX citation styles were provided in a copy/paste format. If that was not enough, I can translate the word from English to a host of other languages with the Dictionary.com Translator feature. And there’s more…I can even share the word and definition with my social networks via Facebook, Twitter, or Google Plus.
I also wanted to find out a little information about the Dictionary.com Company. To find out more information, I clicked the “About Us” link at the bottom of the page. The company began in 1995 under the name Lexico Publishing; however, it was acquired by IAC in 2008. IAC (InterActiveCorp) is a reputable, Internet company with well known brands such as about.com, ask.com, dictionary.com, match.com, vimeo, and many more. The site claims to be the most visited, most trusted online dictionary, and I believe it. It is easy and fun to use. I also love that the Dictionary.com mission is to bring words to life for users. To me, it really did truly achieve this lofty goal.
