Map Quest is a very neat site. In fact, before the huge Google domination, I always used MapQuest when I needed to travel to places unknown or unfamiliar. And although I occasionally still use Google Maps or the Maps app on my iPhone, I still print directions from MapQuest. It's crazy - I know. But, even when my signal freezes on my phone or my GPS in my car is spinning trying to "locate" where I am, I still have my printout from MapQuest.
When I first opened the site, it automatically found my location and displayed a map showing a 30-40 mile radius from my home. One feature I find incredibly helpful is the ability to add features to your map. You can add lodging locations, restaurants and bars, travel services (gas stations, car rentals, etc.), shopping locations, potential activities (museums, theaters, parks, etc.), local services (schools, ATMs, churches, pharmacies, etc.), or search for a particular location. For the purposes of this project, I searched for "Cracker Barrel" locations. One always must know where the nearest Cracker Barrel is located when traveling. You can also add live traffic information that is updated on average every five minutes. You can also toggle between map and satellite image views. I found our home in the satellite view; however, the satellite image has not been updated in several years. We remodeled our home in 2012, and the image still shows our home before remodeling.
In addition to printing your map or directions, to share your geographical information, you can send your map as a link or embed the map within a HTML document. You can also send the information by Facebook or through e-mail. There is also a free MapQuest app for both the Apple and Droid market.
My favorite feature of MapQuest is the ability to print or email driving directions. For example, if I wanted to travel to watch the Georgia-Flordia football game, I could type in my address, type in the address for Gator Bowl Stadium, and viola, like magic, three alternate routes with turn-by-turn directions are presented with approximate mileage, travel times, and estimated fuel costs. Although the same feat can be accomplished through Google Maps or Maps for Apple devices, I still love the features and layout of the Map Quest interface the best. I assign this fantastic resource a score of 10. It is my go-to resource for planning trips.
