ERIC (education) at Cambridge Scientific [ProQuest] - Index with Abstracts
ERIC (education) at Cambridge Scientific [ProQuest]
Grades: 9+ | Subject(s): Running | Overall rating: 10
The ERIC education database at Cambridge Scientific [ProQuest] is an incredible resource for researching topics related to education. ERIC documents are published by the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), part of the National Institute of Education. One of my favorite aspects of this index is that it includes a wide variety of resources, not only journals, magazines, or newspapers. According to the index site within Galileo, in addition to journals, magazines, and newspapers, the index also searches “conferences, meetings, government documents, theses, dissertations, reports, audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories, books and monographs” (ERIC, 2014).
For the purposes of this project, I searched the phrase “high school library orientation” and found 220 results. Researchers can filter the results to include only peer-reviewed materials. When I changed to view only peer-reviewed materials, my list was shortened to include 53 results. However, I am certain that this additional filter would exclude some of the additional resource types offered through the ERIC index. Users can also filter results by source type, publication title, document type, subject, language, education level, target audience, and publication date. Search results can be sorted by relevance or publication date by most recent or most dated listed first.
When you click on a title, users are given typical citation information, an abstract, tags, and the option to find it within the UWG library. However, my favorite feature of the ERIC index is the ability to see similar documents related to the title selected, including e-books. I have ranked this index as a ten because it is easy to use, visually appealing, has excellent searching and filtering options, and because of the suggestions feature.
