Britannica Academic - Biography
Britannica Academic Biography
Grades: 6+ | Subject(s): Biography/African American | Overall rating: 9
Britannica Academic Biography is a neat resource for our students. It is available as part of our Galileo Databases, but provides a user-friendly, aesthetically appealing experience. When users enter the site, an alphabetically-organized, hyperlinked list of biographies appears. Or, users can also filter the alphabetical listing by topic, national or cultural association, era, and gender. Students can also search the site for names or keywords or complete an advanced search. Users can also view primary sources, electronic books, videos, quotations, or videos and other media.
For the purposes of this assignment, I searched for Elvis Presley, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Carter. For each person, a great amount of information was listed. The information given was similar to information obtained from a print encyclopedia. However, a wealth of additional resources was given including pictures, video, audio, links, and related articles and electronic books. In addition, students could access information about the article’s history and contributors. If students had an account with Britannica, they could save the information to their workspace to access. Another helpful tool for students is the ability to cite the articles in MLA, APA, Harvard, and Chicago styles.
I assigned a value of ten for this resource. It’s organized for younger students to be able to find while also being not too elementary for high school students. Additionally, it provides reliable information, pictures, videos, and audio files for students and is aesthetically pleasing and easy to use.
