The Oxford Dictionaries Online is a terrific resource and a well-known and highly esteemed name in the dictionary field. The Oxford English Dictionary began in 1857 when the Philological Society of London called for a new English dictionary and has evolved into one of the most respected names in language (History of the OED, 2013).
When users enter the site, you almost feel as if you are visiting Dictionary.com. Like Dictionary.com, they list a word of the day, a quote of the week, offer several different blog options (community blog, words blog) Twitter and Facebook social network options, a spelling challenge game, information on several different literary topics such as how new words enter the Oxford dictionary), a thesaurus, grammar features (punctuation, common misspellings, common misused words, etc) and much more. Users can also search for words in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, and Italian.
I conducted a search for the word “librarian.” I found results in both the British and World English and US English dictionaries. Both versions listed the term, the pronunciation, the part of speech, the definition, origin, and derivatives, sentence examples, and nearby words. I assigned a rating of 8 for the Oxford Dictionaries Online simply because the advertisements were annoying.
