Grades: 9+ | Subject(s): All | Overall rating: 10
The Gale Literature Resource Center is an incredible resource for students critiquing literature. The site is easy to use, easily navigable, and very organized. When users enter the site, you are given the options to complete a basic search, advanced search, a person search, or a works search. All of the searches provide many options to refine search results.
I completed a Basic Search on "The Heart of Darkness" for this project and found a wealth of information including 501 items of Literature Criticism, 188 Biographies, 30 Topic and Work Overviews, 396 Reviews and News, 93 Primary Sources and Literary Works, and 5 Multimedia items. I examined an article from the results list and found it to be very helpful for research purposes. If I created an account, I could bookmark the document for later review or I could print, e-mail, download, cite, or translate the article into one of nineteen different languages.
I was curious to see the multimedia options available, so I examined an audio recording of an African author discussing his perspective of the novel. It was recorded through NPR and provided a clear MP3 file of the recording as well as a transcript. It was really interesting to get a different perspective on the book.
If I could not find enough information through the sources in Gale's Literature Resource Center, I could click a link and also explore the Gale Literary Index. I assigned a value of 10 for this resource as well. I felt the information was on a higher level and not as user-friendly; however, the wealth of information returned from such a variety of sources was astounding.
